The Little Joys of Saying ‘Yes’

As summer has come to a close, Writer Nicole reflects on her past two summers in university

Let me start this piece by sharing a little about myself! My name is Nicole, and I’m currently in my third year of university.

I’ve always enjoyed the comfort of home, spending time curled up with a book in one hand and my pink Jellycat bunny in the other. Sometimes, I jokingly refer to myself as the “fastest school leaver”, because you’d rarely find me on campus after class.

However, during the summer of 2023, I started asking myself: “What would happen if I said yes more often?”

Little did I know, embracing this mindset would enrich my university experience in ways I could have never anticipated. Here’s why I believe you should consider saying ‘Yes’ more often—even to something as simple as grabbing lunch with friends after class.

Personal growth.

I was never really the type to sign up for events; I’m not the type of person to have the fear of missing out.

But, in 2023, I felt a desire to experience something new and learn from it, and decided to register for 2 orientation camps in the spirit of personal growth!

From there, I realised that university isn’t just about academics; it’s about trying new things and growing from those experiences. These opportunities have taught me to be adaptable, to speak up, and to lead—skills I hadn’t developed as much before.

New friendships.

One of the most valuable outcomes of saying ‘yes’ has been the friendships I’ve formed.

Even after nearly a year, I’m still in touch with the people I’ve met during those early experiences. Expanding your social circle at university, particularly at SMU, where we don’t have the advantage of student residences, can be challenging.

Saying ‘Yes’ to social opportunities is an excellent way to meet new friends! These friendships have and will last long, and I’m grateful for these connections.

New experiences.

“If you never try, you’ll never know” is a mantra I repeat very often.

Taking on new challenges is a powerful way to step out of your comfort zone. Initially, I was hesitant to join orientation camps, only signing up on the last day of registration. I had already convinced myself that I wouldn’t enjoy them—despite never trying them before.

Yet, to my surprise, I had an incredible time! From hiding under each other’s umbrellas; sharing bottles of ice with each other; to ending the day with a nice cool soak in the ocean, I felt that we truly bonded and really had fun, albeit suffering under the sun!

Concluding thoughts

Trying new things not only broadens your horizons, but can also help you discover something you truly enjoy. Even if it isn’t to your liking, at least you gave yourself the chance to explore it.

These are just a few reasons why I encourage everyone to start saying ‘Yes’ more often.

It can be a fulfilling way to venture beyond the familiar and enrich your university experience!

However, it’s equally important to recognize when it’s okay to say ‘No.’ Balance is key. With that, I wish you a fruitful and rewarding academic year!
